Fun Friday Activities

Musical Chairs on the Wyatt Deck

Wyatt Deck, UC Davis, Free, Presented by UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden

It's a two-for-one day on the Wyatt Deck Dec. 1:

  • Chair Share — Learning by Leading Arboretum Ambassadors will set out 10 (mostly) red Adirondack chairs, for anyone who wishes to take a break, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The chairs are meant to entice and encourage our community members to spend more time outside — based on studies showing that even a short time outdoors can reduce stress and improve mood, among a variety of other social and well-being benefits.
  • Folk Music Jam Session — If you're in a chair at noon, stay put for this weekly event lasting until 1 p.m. Or come on out just for the music. You're also welcome to join in as a player (all skill levels welcome).

Friday, Dec. 2, 7-8 p.m., Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center, $12 Students and Children, $24 Adults (Open Seating)

“Reimaginings” celebrates choral music that reinterprets the genre through stylistic fusion, juxtaposition, rearrangement, and revival of historical works by composers who have been excluded from the Western Classical canon. All three UC Davis choirs (University Chorus, Chamber Singers, and Early Vocal Ensemble) will perform. Repertoire highlights include Isabella Leonarda’s Magnificat (1698), Afro-Brazilian classical composer José Maurício Nunes Garcia’s Laudate Dominum, CPM 76 (1813), and works by Reena Esmail, Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, Tomás Luis de Victoria, and Rosephanye Powell, among others. Despite its composition date, the Laudate Dominum likely has never been heard in California and is a premiere of sorts.

Torreya Cummings (B.A., ‘99) and Terry Peterson (M.F.A., ‘12) explore the natural world in a digital context in a two-person exhibition currently on view at the Library Gallery at California State University, Sacramento.

Cummings’ conceptual investigations draw together memory, art historical narratives and a semblance of dioramas found in history museums. Peterson transforms repurposed objects into living, breathing installations.

The artists will give a joint talk Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. at the gallery. “The New West: The Natural Environment in the Digital Age” can be seen through Dec. 10.

Flights of Fancy: Sculpture by Steven McGovney at the Pence

Dec. 2 – 24, reception Dec. 9, 6 – 9 p.m., Pence Gallery, Davis

Steven McGovney has worked in multiple media, but his current concentration is on the sculptural side of ceramics. The artist uses clay, steel wire, acrylic and oil paint to bring his animal and figurative work to life. McGovney’s art merges a surreal side of nature with his love of movement. Birds painted in bright colors are outfitted with shoes and clothing. As he admits, his sculptures at the Pence are truly “imaginary birds inspired by the wacky names of birds themselves.” They totter on long legs, giving a sense of whimsical action. His human figures are often based on fictional characters, such as in Alice in Wonderland, or from his own imagination.
