Dear students,

Fall often feels full — new classes, activities and important choices on the horizon. And when life gets busy, deadlines sneak up fast. This is especially true with the UC application, which requires a thoughtful approach. Don’t let the calendar set the pace. The best way to stay on track this application season is to make a plan that lets you show us who you are. Plan ahead. Use each section to highlight your story and give yourself space to recharge.

Work backward from deadlines
The UC application submission period opens Oct. 1 and closes Dec. 1. Two months may sound like a lot of time, but life and school move fast. Map out when you want to complete each section and give yourself a check-in date. Make time for edits, technical hiccups or life’s unexpected moments. Start early to keep stress low and ensure that your best work shines through.

Robert’s sample schedule

Week 1: Gather your transcript, awards and activities list.

Week 2 and 3: Draft and refine your activities section and PIQs.

Week 4 and 5: Ask someone you trust to review your application.

Week 6: Do a full read-through, check for errors and prepare to submit early.

Everybody’s application journey looks different — just make sure you keep an eye on deadlines.

Understand what each application section tells us
Each part of the UC application provides insight into who you are. Academic records show how well you prepared yourself for college. Activities and awards reveal your commitments and passions outside the classroom. Personal Insight Questions, or PIQs, let us hear your voice directly. Together, these sections tell a complete story — your story — that goes far beyond just grades.

Balance work and rest
Your last school year before college matters, both academically and personally. Stay on top of classes and responsibilities but also take care of yourself. Create small habits — set aside dedicated time for applications, keep materials in one place and schedule breaks — to help you feel more in control.

The UC application is just one step in your academic journey, not the beginning or the end. My best piece of advice, don’t forget to submit early just in case the power goes out at 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 1!
