Two Aggie alumni, Hugh Hogland and Ty Kelly, are among more than 100 University of California students past and present competing in the Tokyo Olympics. The opening ceremony is today (July 23), although competition in the Summer Games has already begun in some events.
And, from UC Davis Health, Marcia “Marcy” Faustin is co-head team physician for Team USA women’s gymnastics, among nearly 30 coaches and medical staff from UC who are participating in the Summer Games.
Hogland played basketball here in 2020-21 while enrolled in the Graduate School of Management. In the Olympics, he is playing for Japan — he has U.S. and Japanese citizenship — and using the surname Watanabe, his mother’s maiden name. He came to UC Davis with two years of collegiate eligibility (after graduating early from the University of Portland); after playing just one season with the Aggies, he signed a professional contract with Japan's B League.
Kelly, who played baseball here in 2008 and 2009 before going professional, is taking the field for Israel in the Olympics. A Jewish American who also has Israeli citizenship, he first played for Israel in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, then rejoined the team at the European Championship and Africa/Europe Olympic Qualification Tournament in 2019. Israel won the latter, earning a berth in in the Tokyo Games, the country’s first-ever appearance in Olympic baseball.
