Campus firefighters are part of Yolo County strike team that departed today (Oct. 27) to help fight a day-old wildfire in Southern California. UC Davis Deputy Chief Nate Hartinger is the strike team leader-trainer.

UC Davis firefighters aboard Engine 234 are Capt. Steve Dunn, engineer Derek Carthy, and firefighters Mike Cullen and Chris Hay.

They’re headed to the Silverado Fire, which CalFire said this morning had grown to 11,000 acres and was only 5 percent contained.

Staff Experience Survey ends Oct. 31

We’ve passed the halfway mark in number of responses to the first-ever Staff Experience Survey for represented and policy-covered staff. The other half (or almost half) has only until this Saturday (Oct. 31) to get their responses in.

For every survey returned, Human Resources is donating $1 to the Staff Emergency Fund — $4,058 as of 5 p.m. Monday (Oct. 26), based on a 54 percent response rate. See how your school, college or division is doing.

Blood drive goes on without football

There’s no Causeway Classic Blood Drive this year, but we’ve still got a blood drive coming up next week: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 4-5, in The Pavilion at the ARC.

Vitalant, formerly Blood Source, called off the annual competition between UC Davis and California State University, Sacramento, due to the fact most students are engaged in remote instruction this term — not to mention the fact the Causeway Classic football game between the schools will not be played.

Appointments are encouraged for next week’s blood and marrow drive, and can be arranged online (log in to your Vitalant account or proceed as a guest; search for the UC Davis blood drives by using Blood Drive Code SMFL016).

The Nov. 4-5 blood and marrow drive follows on the heels of an Oct. 13 drive on campus that brought in 85 pints of pints of blood and one plasma unit, from a total of 106 people who registered. Not everyone who registers can complete the process for a variety of reasons.
