‘You otter drink water’
The Healthy Beverage Initiative, which says “water is the way to go” to stay hydrated, recently unveiled a trio of ambassadors who can help you find free, filtered-water dispensers around UC Davis, including more than a dozen that were installed over the last year and a half.
Otto Otter, Shelly Turtle and Aggie Cow are pictured on directional signs with these sayings: “You otter drink water,” “Shell-ect free, filtered water” and “You herd right — free water.”
UC rolled out the Healthy Beverage Initiative systemwide in 2019 to encourage the consumption of tap water as a healthy, free and sustainable alternative to sugary drinks. This year the initiative is emphasizing educational outreach and increased access to water.
Student Health and Counseling Services, or SCHS, has created a map showing all of the filtered-water stations on the Davis campus. SCHS also is running a campaign: “Hydrate to Feel Great.”
The Healthy Beverage Initiative webpage offers information on the sustainability, savings and health aspects of water, as well as daily recommendations for water consumption. Other sections tell you how to identify sugary drinks and how to make the switch to healthy beverages.
The webpage also includes a Healthy Beverage Quiz. Participants will be eligible to win Healthy UC Davis reusable water bottles. (Did you know? By filling up your bottle at a water station instead of buying soda every day, you could save $365 to $1,095 per year, assuming an expenditure of $1 to $3 a day).
Sabbatical housing service
A reminder about the University Farm Circle’s sabbatical housing service — a listing of house rentals and house searches geared toward UC Davis staff and faculty.
The $75 transaction fee is tax deductible, in that the revenue supports the farm circle’s awarding of scholarships to UC Davis students. To advertise a home rental or home search, contact Diane Steele by email.
Founded in 1914, the University Farm Circle is UC Davis’ longest running support group, connecting campus and community through scholarship, enrichment and friendship.
Remote early learning program
The Early Childhood Laboratory at the Center for Child and Family Studies is offering an eight-week virtual early learning program starting Monday (Oct. 10). Tuition is $125.
The program will provide experiences and education for children 1 to 4 years old and the adults who care for them. Parent and/or family caregiver participation is expected.
A child development specialist will lead each session, incorporating music and movement, storybook reading and hands-on exploratory play while providing opportunities for social connections for children and adults.
Family education topics include caregiving skills, social competence, social communication, behavior, self-help and thinking skills, temperament, creativity and critical thinking and diversity.
Children will be divided by age into classes, including one in Spanish.
Learn more by reading these flyers in English and Spanish. Each flyer includes a registration link.
