Cuéllar

Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, an associate justice of the California Supreme Court, will be the first guest speaker this commencement season — addressing the School of Law on Friday (May 15).

Before he joined the state’s high court in January, Cuéllar had a distinguished career as a legal scholar specializing in administrative law, criminal law and public policy. He was a professor of law and director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University.

Twelve other commencements are scheduled from May 21 to June 14. Guest speakers include:

• Barbara Natterson-Horowitz, School of Veterinary Medicine, May 21 — A professor of medicine and adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCLA, she is co-director of the university’s evolutionary medicine program and director of its Zoobiquity Research Initiative. She also serves as a member of the medical advisory board at the Los Angeles Zoo. She is co-author of Zoobiquity: The Astonishing Connection Between Human and Animal Health, and chairs an education program that fosters interdisciplinary discussions among physicians and veterinarians.
• Nadine Burke Harris, School of Medicine, May 30 — Founder and chief executive officer of the Center for Youth Wellness in San Francisco, she has earned international recognition for her innovative approach to addressing adverse childhood experiences as risk factors for adult disease.
• Michael Kirst, School of Education, June 10 — He’s president of the California Board of Education, a professor emeritus of education and business administration at Stanford University, and co-editor of Remaking College: The Changing Ecology of Higher Education.
• Christine A. Gulbranson, Graduate Studies, June 11 — She is the founder and CEO of Christalis, a strategic advisory firm, and holds five degrees from UC Davis. She served as a judge on the Discovery Channel’s reality show The Big Brain Theory: Pure Genius.
• Nancy E. Pfund, Graduate School of Management, June 13 — She champions investments with social, economic and environmental returns as founder and managing partner of DBL Investors, a San Francisco-based venture capital firm, and was among “The World’s Top 25 Eco-Innovators” named by Fortune magazine in 2014.

The numbers for degrees awarded will be available later in the year. In 2013-14, UC Davis conferred 6,765 bachelor’s degrees, 836 master’s degrees, 505 doctoral degrees and 589 professional degrees — for a total of 8,695.
