Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and University of California, Davis, Chancellor Gary S. May have formed an advisory group to guide the vision for Aggie Square, the innovation hub planned along the city’s Stockton-Broadway corridor.
The Aggie Square Partnership Advisory Council will provide advice on matters related to the project’s development on the UC Davis Sacramento campus. The council has been asked to offer guidance on economic and community development opportunities that will create job growth and new businesses, while keeping in mind beneficial outcomes for the university, local neighborhoods, and the greater Sacramento region.
The council is made up of elected officials, Sacramento and city representatives, and leaders from UC Davis.
“As we develop the plan for Aggie Square, it’s crucial that we ensure the jobs created there offer good wages and growth opportunities to the children growing up in our Sacramento neighborhoods today,” said Mayor Steinberg. “This exciting partnership between the city and UC Davis will help Sacramento grow advanced industry jobs and diversify our economic base.”
The council will meet periodically. A separate neighborhood committee may be formed at a later date.
“The people that comprise this council bring vital voices to lift Aggie Square to the next level,” May said. I have full confidence we will learn a lot and progress in a way that makes sense for all who will be impacted by Aggie Square.”
Aggie Square will serve as a collaborative technology and innovation campus that leverages the university’s strengths to become the catalyst for economic change, creates jobs, and helps spur economic vitality of the surrounding neighborhoods and the broader Sacramento region. It will serve as a model public-private partnership, increasing technology transfer and creating equitable opportunities for residents in the community and region. It will support new jobs at a variety of education levels.
On April 12, Steinberg and May held a press conference to announce the selection of the UC Davis Health Campus as the location for Aggie Square.
