NEWS BRIEFS: DACA Renewal Forms Due

Quick Summary

  • Police board to hold public meetings

With the federal government’s deadline for renewal applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program only two days away, UC officials have one last reminder for eligible students and other community members: Please get your forms in, and don’t wait until the last day. Do it today (Oct. 3), just to be on safe side.

UC also is reminding students to take advantage of available funds to pay the renewal application fees.

The Trump administration announced Sept. 5 that it would end the DACA program in six months, on March 5, and set Oct. 5 as the deadline for renewal applications from people with DACA expiration dates up to and including March 5. Even if DACA is phased out permanently next year, UC maintains that applying for a renewal is the best opportunity to obtain legal authorization to work and two more years of protection against deportation.

UC Davis students have been advised of two funding sources to help pay the $495 renewal application fee:

  • Aggie DREAM Fund — Contact the AB540 and Undocumented Student Center. (The center's director, Andrea Gaytan, said she can assist nonstudents as well, by pointing them to noncampus fund sources.)
  • Mission Asset Fund — This San Francisco-based nonprofit organization has set a deadline of 11:59 p.m. PDT today (Oct. 3) to apply for grant money, and those checks will have to be picked up in person at the fund office.

UC has approximately 4,000 undocumented students, a substantial number of whom have DACA, as well as teachers, researchers and health care providers who are DACA recipients. UC is working on many fronts to ensure that protections continue for those in our community who, in good faith, joined the DACA program.

UC filed a lawsuit Sept. 8 in federal court against the Trump administration for wrongly and unconstitutionally violating the rights of the university and its students by rescinding the DACA program. The lawsuit asks the court to set aside the rescission, calling it “unconstitutional, unjust and unlawful.”

Police board to hold public meetings

The Police Accountability Board will hold its fall quarter public meetings on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Following past practice, two meetings will be held simultaneously, noon to 1 p.m., on the Davis and Sacramento campuses. Some members of the board will attend the Davis meeting, others will attend the Sacramento meeting.

Here are the locations:

  • Davis campus — Fielder Room, Memorial Union (second floor). (When first posted last week, this news brief gave an incorrect room for the Davis campus meeting; the correct room is Fielder.)
  • Sacramento campus — 3103 Education Building (4610 X St.)

Members of the public are invited to meet PAB members, learn more about the board’s work, and raise any issues or concerns they may have.
