The Office of the University Registrar is moving out of the basement of Mrak Hall. After a one-day closure this Friday (Sept. 11), the office is scheduled to reopen at 10 a.m. Monday (Sept. 14) in 3100 Dutton Hall, the building that already houses Financial Aid and Scholarships, Student Accounting and the Cashier’s Office.

“We are creating a central place for students to access the services they use most,” University Registrar Elias Lopez said, “just like we and our campus partners accomplished online when we reimagined the myucdavis student website two years ago.”

The office also serves faculty and career staff, who may go to the registrar for assistance in support of students’ academic and administrative needs, or to request Employee-Student Reduced Fee Authorizations.

While the office is closed on Friday, the registrar’s staff will still be accessible by phone, (530) 752-3639, and email (via myucdavis’ “Contact an Expert” page webpage).

For transcripts and education verifications during the office closure, you may visit the AggieCard office, 1210 Dutton Hall (open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays).

Lopez, who besides serving as the registrar is also the executive director of the Student Affairs Office of Technology, is moving, too. He and other members of the technology team will leave their offices on the first floor of Mrak Hall to take the freed-up registrar’s space in the basement — in a move that is due for completion by the start of winter quarter.

Time to put up your new calendar!

The university’s new poster calendar is available for purchase in all UC Davis Stores. Rolled calendars are available at the main store (in its temporary location in the Memorial Union's east wing) and Downtown Store, and folded calendars are available at the Welcome Center and Pro Shop (at the Activities and Recreation Center).

The cost is the same as last year: $1.89 each, folded or rolled. UC Davis Stores upped its order this year to 4,500, and expects to sell 3,600 to departments, said Sarah Brodberg, buyer.

Departments still wishing to place orders should contact Brodberg by email. Purchases are eligible for the 10 percent departmental discount.

For the second year in a row, the calendar features a “One” theme, in connection with the “One UC Davis” campaign. This year’s artwork (by Jay leek of Strategic Communications) presents a fun challenge: See if you can identify all of the individual objects that make up the letters “o,” “n” and “e,” and the years “2015-16.”

University Farm Circle starts new year

A more-than-century-old UC Davis tradition continues this fall when the University Farm Circle welcomes newcomers to the campus and community. You need not be affiliated with the university to join.

The university’s oldest support organization raises money for UC Davis scholarships, while also providing educational and social programs for members.

Besides general programs and newcomers activities, the farm circle sponsors more than 50 interest sections on such subjects as antiquing and crafts, bird watching and hiking, and photography and writing, plus lunch, dinner and travel groups.

Weil, teammates finish strong in world rowing

Aggie alum Seth Weil ’11 and his rowing teammates bounced back in their World Rowing Championships final during the weekend to secure a place for the United States in the men’s 4 in the Summer Olympics next year in Rio de Janeiro.

Weil and teammates competed in the B final — for seventh through 12th place — after the U.S. men’s 4 finished fifth in the semifinals on Sept. 3. So, to qualify for the Olympics, the boat needed to capture one of the top five places in the B final at the championships in Aiguebelette, France.

With all four regulars on board, the men’s 4 won the B final in 05:53:450, more than 2 seconds faster than their first-place time in their preliminary heat on Aug. 30. (In between, two of Weil’s teammates fell ill, and a substitute filled in for one of them in the semi.) See photos from the prelim.

While the U.S. men’s 4 has secured a spot in the Rio Olympics, there is still a long way to go before US Rowing decides which rowers will be in the boat.

Weil, who rowed with the men’s crew sport club at UC Davis and now trains in Princeton, N.J., medaled with the U.S. men’s 4 team in the last two World Rowing Championships: bronze in 2013 and silver in 2014. In June of this year, he and his teammates won gold at World Cup II.

Blood draw nets 229 pints

BloodSource says, “Thank you, Davis campus,” for donating 229 pints of blood over two (very warm) days, Aug. 26-27.

“We registered 315 participants and collected 229 pints of lifesaving blood,” said Felicia Roper of BloodSource. “We also had seven platelet donors and had 16 folks sign up on the Be the Match bone marrow registry.”

BloodSource will return Tuesday-Wednesday, Nov. 3-4, for the eighth annual Causeway Classic Blood Drive.
