The UC Davis Fire Department and other area departments will be conducting training exercises next week that include prescribed burns on campus.
The departments will be setting prescribed burns at Russell Ranch on June 14, and on the land of the Yocha Dehe tribe on June 15. Between those two locations, the departments will burn between 200-300 acres.
“Unlike an uncontrolled wildfire, we will be burning smaller sections then extinguishing,” Fire Chief Nate Trauernicht said.
Smoke plumes may be visible from the central areas of campus on June 14.
The exercises are part of a four-day wildfire training being overseen by the West Valley Regional Fire Training Consortium.
