Campus Dialogue and Deliberation is presenting a three-hour workshop on “Bridging Divides With Dialogue,” and Student Affairs is holding its second annual “Stay Day,” a stay-on-campus conference for staff members who work directly with students.

“Bridging Divides With Dialogue” — Open to faculty and other academics, staff, graduate students and undergraduate students. The workshop will be presented three times in August, twice on the Davis campus (Aug. 10 and 14) and once in Sacramento (Aug. 13).

Carolyn Penny, the director of Campus Dialogue and Deliberation, said dialogue offers a means of connecting as a community despite strong differences of opinion. She will lead the upcoming workshops, during which participants can learn dialogue skills and experience dialogue with other members of the UC Davis community.

“Serving Students in the 21st Century” — The organizers said the free program, scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19, will feature presentations by other staff on best practices, strategies and research to spark dialogue and collaboration among staff, to help in their dealings with students.

Sample topics among the 25 sessions include effective responses to student protests, using social media and video to tell your story, advising military veterans and pronouncing Chinese names.

About 300 staff members attended the inaugural Stay Day program last year.

Registration for this year’s program can be arranged online. The program is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Conference Center.
