Forecasters got it right last week on the wind and rain. Now, here’s another forecast — and we’re guaranteeing it: The temperature will drop in many buildings during winter break — so, if you’re working, you may want to bring an extra sweater.

You might want to bring your own coffee, too, because all your campus haunts will be shut down from Christmas Eve through New Year’s, and only two places — the Coffee House and the Fusion Fresh Café (outside the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts) — will be open Monday-Tuesday, Dec. 22-23. The CoHo and the CoHo South Café will reopen Friday, Jan. 2, and the Fusion Fresh Café on Monday, Jan. 5. (The Hyatt Place hotel has coffee and food for sale, and it's open all through the holidays.)

Other important notes for winter break:

  • The Police Department will be fully staffed, but officers will not have the benefit of thousands of students and employees to help keep an eye on things. So, it’s more important than ever for those of us who are coming to work, to stay alert and report any suspicious activity. Call 911 or (530) 752-1230.
  • Facilities Management will have personnel available to deal with buildings and grounds emergencies; call the customer service center, (530) 752-1655, for assistance.

Thermostat setback

Turning down the thermostat has become routine in recent years as a way to save energy. Lab space is excluded, to preseve the integrity of the research environments.

The campus already adjusts thermostats year-round for less heat or air conditioning on weekends, when buildings are for the most part unoccupied. During winter break, people are gone longer, offering the opportunity for even more energy savings.

This winter’s thermostat setback will run from Christmas Day through New Year’s Day. The period takes in:

  • Four administrative holidays, Dec. 25-26 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1.
  • The weekend, Dec. 27-28.
  • Two regular workdays, Monday-Tuesday, Dec. 29-30 — days that many people will take as vacation days, so as to make for a longer winter break.

Everything returns to normal on Friday, Jan. 2. Winter quarter starts the following Monday, Jan. 5.

Attention departments that close for winter break: Help with energy conservation by turning off the lights and office equipment. See the Campus Energy Checklist.

If you have concerns about the scheduled heat setbacks, contact the Facilities Management customer service center, (530) 752-1655.

Transportation

Unitrans is running finals service through Friday (Dec. 19), and weekend or break service after that, through Jan. 4, with the exception of Dec. 24-25 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1, when the buses will not run.

The Police Department’s Safe Ride program  will be in service most days over winter break, with the possible exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. However, you may be able to get a ride those days, in the event a student driver or drivers are available. Call (530) 754-COPS (2677) to find out if you can get a ride those days, or to arrange rides on other days. Safe Ride is normally available from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., seven days a week, to drive people from campus to any location in the city of Davis.

The Davis-Sacramento shuttle will operate on a reduced schedule Dec. 22-Jan. 2, except on the four administrative holidays, Dec. 24-25 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1, when there will be no service.
