Representatives of UC Davis’ men’s and women’s rugby clubs will be on the pitch this Saturday night (June 25) in Sacramento. But they won’t be getting dirty in a match. Instead, they’re being recognized for their recent national championships.

USA Rugby is bestowing the honors at Bonney Field (at Cal Expo) prior to the 7 p.m. USA Men’s Eagles match against Russia.

The UC Davis men’s and women’s teams won their championships May 7 at St. Mary’s College in Moraga. The men took the Division 1AA title for the second year in a row, while the women captured the DI spring championship. See Dateline story.

“These two clubs are both truly outstanding examples of the UC Davis sport club model — as they are committed to being student-run and -managed organizations,” said Laura Hall, director of Campus Recreation. “We are first and foremost proud of them as student leaders, and their success on the pitch is a testament to the hard work and dedication toward their goals both on and off the pitch.”

Lauren Kim Sing, president of the women’s sport club, said recognition by USA Rugby “shows how far we have come as a club, especially in the last two years.”

“I never could have imagined something like this happening in my freshman year.”

USA Men’s Eagles vs. Russia tickets are available online. The CBS Sports Network will present a recording of the game one day after, at 6 p.m. PDT Sunday (June 26).

Management Skills Assessment Program

Applications are being accepted for UC’s Management Skills Assessment Program, designed to assess the management skills of high potential, early career supervisors, managers and professionals for future leadership opportunities at UC.

The next MSAP program is scheduled for Oct. 10-13 at the UCLA Conference Center in Lake Arrowhead, for employees from around the UC system.

UC Davis is seeking campus and health system applicants to fill seven slots. “We strongly recommend that department heads discuss the program with supervisors, managers and professionals who exhibit potential for management development and encourage them to apply,” the announcement states.

More information is available online. The site includes a link to the online application form (including applicant and supervisor components). Completed applications must be submitted online by 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 13.

IP Licensing Academy underway at King Hall

UC Davis’ sixth annual Licensing Academy in Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer began this week at the School of Law. The King Hall academy, for commercial law students, lawyers, technology transfer officers, academics and inventors, is a collaboration of the law school and UC Davis’ Public Intellectual Property Resource in Agriculture (PIPRA) program.

The academy is international in scope, serving UC Davis students and others from Asia, Africa and the Pacific Rim. This year’s class comprises 36 students from 19 countries.

The two-week academy comprises seminars, case studies, field trips, group projects and a two-day license agreement writing workshop.

Speakers include UC Davis’ Dushyant Pathak, associate vice chancellor for Technology Management and Corporate Relations, Office of Research; and Alan B. Bennett, distinguished professor of plant sciences and executive director of PIPRA; along with other UC Davis faculty members.

The program also features talks by intellectual property managers and technology transfer officers from UC Davis’ Innovation Access, program managers from UC Davis Corporate Relations and the Graduate School of Management, and leaders from other campus partners as well as IP professionals from Silicon Valley and Sacramento.

Support group for caregivers among us

WorkLife and Wellness and the Women’s Resources and Research Center will host a facilitated monthly support group for staff, retirees and students who are caring for adults who are sick, disabled or fragile with age.

Clinical psychologist Louise Bettner will facilitate the group the second Friday of each month, starting July 8, from noon to 1 p.m. in the WRRC Conference Room, North Hall. No reservations necessary.
