Hang tags: This year's shirts come with tags that are definitely worth reading. Here are some examples:
- Did you know? Each year in the U.S., 55,000 more women than men have a stroke.
- Did you know? Most women do not “know their numbers” for heart disease risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.
Each message concludes with "Change is possible: Visit womenshearthealth.ucdavis.edu."
$2 from every sale goes to the UC Davis Women’s Cardiovascular Medicine Program.

Rain didn’t stop last year’s heart formation and it won’t stop this year’s! So, come to Hutchison Field this Friday (Feb. 6) and be a part of UC Davis’ big, red event for heart health!
Everyone’s invited: students, staff, faculty, the community at large. The Battle Heart Disease Fair will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in tents around the site of the heart formation, which is scheduled for noon.
It’s UC Davis Wears Red Day — so don’t forget to pick up the 2015 heart shirt available at all UC Davis Stores. For every shirt sold, $2 goes to the UC Davis Women’s Cardiovascular Medicine Program.
Last year, for the first UC Davis Wears Red Day, our donation totaled $8,441. We’re hoping to beat that this year, just like we’re hoping for a heart formation with more than the 2,500 people who turned out in the rain last year.
Friday’s forecast, wouldn’t you know it, after one of the driest Januarys on record, indicates rain is almost certain at noon — but the UC Davis Wears Red Day organizers said the event will go on! Bring your umbrella, or, better yet, grab yourself a clear poncho so your red shirt shows through — and remember, the Battle Heart Disease Fair will be sheltered by tents.
Live radio, Zumba and a Q&A
The fair will include a live, two-hour broadcast by radio station KSFM 102.5 FM — and, at 11:30 a.m., depending on the rain, a group Zumba exercise.
Amparo Villablanca, cardiologist, professor and director, Women’s Cardiovascular Medicine Program, will conduct a question-and-answer session at 11:45 a.m.
Dining Services will sell healthy snacks and beverages at a discount. (Or, if you like, wear red to any dining commons on Feb. 6 and get a discount there!)
The Alpha Pi Sigma sorority is once again organizing the Battle Heart Disease Fair. Confirmed participants include three student-run health clinics (Bayanihan, Imani and Tepati), UC Davis Medical Center, Aggie Heart Association, Minority Association of Premedical Students (MAPS), Recognizing Illnesses Very Early and Responding (RIVER), Chican@s/Latin@s in Health Education (CHE), Alpha Phi and Alpha Pi Sigma sororities, Student Nutrition Association, Student Health and Counseling Services’ Health Promotion Department, and the Activities and Recreation Center.
Cocktails & Couture
With February being National Heart Month, UC Davis will promote heart health awareness until the very last day of the month: Saturday, Feb. 28, the date for this year’s edition of The Power of Red: Cocktails & Couture, a benefit event hosted by Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi.
“The Power of Red” comes from the red dresses that will be debuted as this year’s additions to the UC Davis Red Dress Collection. The dresses represent design students’ take on the national symbol for heart health awareness among women (it’s their leading cause of death).
The Power of Red: Cocktails & Couture is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Grand Nave Ballroom of the Sheraton Grand hotel, 1230 J St., Sacramento. Tickets are $250 per person, with proceeds going to the Women’s Cardiovascular Medicine Program and the Department of Design. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. For more information, contact Jean Wigglesworth at Ceremonies and Special Events, by phone (530) 754-2011, or email.
The Department of Design and the Women’s Cardiovascular Medicine Program launched the UC Davis Red Dress project in 2000 with the goal of engaging women across generations in heart health awareness. Students have been adding to the collection every year since.
You can see 18 of the dresses in a winter quarter exhibition, “Red Dress, Design Stories for Heart Health,” at the Design Museum (in Cruess Hall). The museum is open from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, and runs through March 13.
